Jean Huang says a good roadmap should begin with clear company goals. First, decide what the company is trying to do. Then break that into a few simple product strategies. After that, test ideas, pick what matters most, and turn it into a plan the team can follow. The roadmap should help everyone see how their daily work connects to the big picture. 

DEEP CUT: If your roadmap feels messy, the problem might be that the main goal is not clear yet. 

Here in the ZURB world, we see this a lot. A team improves something like onboarding and says, “Look, it’s better!” People nod in the meeting, but nothing really happens. That is the push way. The team hopes the value will be obvious.

The pull way is different. Start with a real business step, like getting new users to sign up or buy. Look at where people get stuck. Use simple metrics to see what is happening. Then design from there.

DEEP CUT: Design works better when everyone agrees on the problem first. When you solve the problem together, you do not have to defend your ideas as much. You are all trying to win the same game.

Chris Becker argues that your long-term advantage over AI is not speed, but your ability to think, generate ideas, and shape meaning. While AI can quickly generate layouts and copy by predicting patterns, it lacks lived experience and an understanding of context and tradeoffs, and he emphasizes that the physical act of sketching is what builds real conceptual strength.

DEEP CUT: Strong designers will use AI to amplify their ability to frame problems and judge quality, while others will simply depend on it to do the work.
